Gold at the 12th ASEAN Para Games, Cambodia

So, the para-athletics team wrapped up their events yesterday, June 7th, and it was a bit of a rollercoaster ride. But, they ended on a really positive note! They brought home a gold medal and two silver medals, which is even better than what they achieved in the last ASEAN Para Games. Great job, team!
Muhammad Diroy Noordin defended his gold medal title in the F40/41 Men Shot Put event by throwing 9.17 metres. He struggled to secure a medal in the F40/41 Men Javelin (23.97m) and Discus (18.60m) events, but he was able to regain his focus and defend his title.
James Ethan, who made his debut in the last edition of the games in 2022, won two silver medals in the T13 Men 200m (23.33secs) and 400ms (51.22secs) events. His coach, former national sprinter Muhamad Hosni, took over right after the Games in Solo. Under Hosni’s tutelage, James renewed his personal best time in the 400m event, which broke the national record for the category. In his event T13 Men 100m, he clocked 11.61secs.
Lionel Toh missed the 2022 games due to injury but came back strong and promising after renewing both of his season’s best times at the WPA Grand Prix 2023 in Marrakech held in March. He clocked 13.50secs (100m) and 27. 6secs (200m) for the T37 Men category.
Maisarah Mohamed Hassan, the only female sprinter, managed to clock her season’s best times of 17.35secs (100m) and 37.78secs (200m) in the T38 Women category. Although she was a bit disappointed with her races, she is looking forward to her next outing at the World Championships in July.
Suhairi Suhani, another athlete in the T20 Men Long Jump event, jumped and landed at a distance of 6.39 metres, earning him fourth place in the category. He suffered from several setbacks prior to the Games but was able to complete his event successfully, to the relief of his coaches.
Four of the above athletes have qualified to compete in the World Championships 2023 in Paris this coming July. This is a huge opportunity for the team to compete against some of the best athletes in the world. But that’s not all – they’re also hoping to secure a direct entry to the Paralympics through their performance in this competition.
