2021 PAS Annual Local Classification Exercise

Para Athletics (Singapore), PAS, will be conducting its first local classification for 2021. This local classification exercise aims to determine an athlete’s eligibility to compete in World Para Athletics competitions. A system devised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) describes methods for dividing eligible athletes up into sport classes. The aim is that each class should consist of athletes who have impairments that cause approximately the same amount of activity limitation in the key athletic disciplines – running, wheelchair-racing, jumps and throws.

To be eligible for Para-athletics, a person must have an eligible impairment type and the impairment must be judged to be severe enough to have an impact on the sport of athletics. A Minimum Disability Criteria (MDC) are described in the World Para Athletics Classification (WPA) Rules and Regulations.

Who should go for the local classification exercise?

It is open to all current athletes who are scheduled for review and the new ones (potential athletes) who would like to be considered for international competitions and the upcoming major games. The juniors and youths age-group categories are also encouraged to go for this local classification exercise.

Upcoming National Trials (Series)

For the purpose of selecting athletes to represent the nation for upcoming major games, PAS will be holding the national trials on 22 May 2021 and/or 12 June 2021. Only current licensed athletes and those have gone for the local classification exercise would be eligible for the national trials.

Vision Impairment (VI)

For Vision Impairment (VI) athletes, as the local classification is centralised at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), the prior arrangement has to be established before any booking can be made. Please get more information via email to – classification@para-athletics.org.sg
